Cordell Sofa (1975)

The Cordell Sofa is the most extraordinary piece in the collection. The frame is the strongest light-weight seating structure of its size ever built in hardwood. The design would not be possible without the unusual flex elasticity of this material. It is constructed from 35 posts and beams connected with stainless steel threaded rods and bronze-plated steel cap-nuts. No glue or gripping screws are used.

The sofa was named in honor of Capt. Terry Cordell, a U.S. Army Special Forces Commando who died on October 15, 1962 under enemy fire while flying a helicopter with his wounded soldiers to a field hospital. He and the artist were friends.
